Week 5

Esta semana,

Yet another crazy week in DC, the heat is finally not getting to me, it only took 5 weeks and an imminent hurricane/tropical storm/tornado to make me appreciate the heat. Besides the weather, I feel like I'm making some lasting connections with great people; I hope I'll be able to visit everyone again in the near future. The interns here are so friendly and different. It's funny to be around a bunch of art nerds just like me.

My roommates, also, are really warming up to me. This weekend one roommate and I went to Dark Knight (amazing movie! totally and completely awesome...must see). They both are really awesome people, I hope they'll come visit Telluride if they get the chance.

As for work, the past couple of days I've been focusing mostly on Judith and intern stuff. Judith arranged for this week to be a week full of "intern workshops"; the workshops focus on SAAM interns: what they want to know about grad schools for art, the Smith. business world, resumes etc. Judith has me sorting through old files of interns to get examples of resumes and letters of intent and other stuff akin to that.

Judith's also working on putting together this Smithsonian all access file that gives information about intern's experiences, follows their careers, provides handouts on "how-to" stuff around the museum and businesses. I've been digging through this huge box of files for a few days now (so much paper work!) and I've put together some handouts, such as a "what to do if the weather is bad" paper (for lack of better explanation) and a bibliography for all her resources.

Usually the interns have a day a week we get to have the opportunity to tour one of the major buildings in DC (Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art Library, Renwick Gallery, Zoo etc), but his week we all were preoccupied with the workshops. I did manage to tour around over the weekend though, I went to Georgetown University and fell in love with the campus, I also took the afternoon on Saturday just to go an read on the Lincoln Memorial. I was surprised at how peaceful it could be sitting and looking at the Reflecting Pool, especially with all of the tourists EVERYWHERE.

This internship has been an amazing opportunity; I feel comfortable being by myself in a strange city, as well as competent with figuring out foreign transportation systems. I've been able to balance my spending and saving, the daily dosage so to speak, and I've experimented lightly with cooking (more like baking). DC is a great city, I think I'm going to want to come back at some point to stay for a while.

I only have one more week to spend here, and a few more days to live it up in the city. Overall, I feel like I've developed as a person, and I recommend it to anyone interested in a fabulous experience. I hope everyone is having an amazing summer! I know I'll be sorry say goodbye to my temporary home!

See you all in one week!

Week 3

After a crazy weekend around the 4th of July, this week just continued to be hectic due to my parents arriving on Wednesday, and my birthday on Thursday. Monday, another tour was set up for the interns, this time of the National Gallery of Art. As I was possibly going to intern at this museum originally, I found the experience very interesting just by viewing the differences in the museums. SAAM focuses on American Art solely, whereas the National Gallery has collections from all over the world… Continue

Week 2

The adventures of Evan continue with week numero dos. By week 2, I was used to the subway, the dark, cramped quarters with the overwhelming heat and bored looking faces of the people on board. I was used to the city's downfalls, the homeless people on the sidewalks, the occasional litter, the horrible heat. I was even a bit used to being solo in a room full of people. I was already used to the bad aspects of moving from the rural parts to the Capital of the United States. Things could only go up… Continue

Week 1

My first impression when arriving in DC was the heat, and the waves of moisture in the air that took my breathe away. When my dad and I arrived into DC, it was already late in the evening; the city was quiet. We caught a taxi from Ronald Reagan to the hotel at which we were staying, then immediately headed for the first Irish pub we could find. After being stopped, carded, and watched by beady eyes through the restaurant, my dad and I managed to find a table and order the least healthy grub on t… Continue

Hey Evan - do you have all of your internship entries saved somewhere? For some reason these are not posting to the main "blog" page & therefore aren't archiving. They only seem to be posted singularly on your personal page. I want to make sure to have all of your entries for future publication as you are doing some very cool work this summer! Lemme know. Thanks!
