Maddie - From Peru

Hi all. I wanted to share a letter that Maddie sent to her parents (who then sent it to me) about her first week in Peru. I thought you all would enjoy...

Mom and Dad,

You won’t believe how amazing it is to be down here and all the information about plants I have learned.
Okay so on Monday we packed our big backpacks (I had to use the red one) and headed to Cadena. Cadena is a tiny town on the outskirts of Quincemil. The purpose of the expedition was to scout the site out for further use and s… Continue

Peru - From Louisa Clark

Hi all. Well, Louisa & Maddie left this week for Peru and have already had quite the adventure! I wanted to post an email Louisa sent about their first couple of days in Cusco, Peru...

Sent: July 10, 2008
Hi Everyone,

I arrived in Peru three days ago and everything that had been planned didn´t work out. Maddie and I were supposed to be picked up at the airport by a grad student with the program named Andy. When we got to Cusco, there was a man named Javier there with a sign that said our n… Continue

Hey Sonchia! I just thought I'd check in! Since Adriane has come I have been very busy. I have a few different projects I have been working on. One where I check about fifty samples of wood every day and collect the bugs that I encounter. I put the bugs in alcohol and label the date and name of the wood sample. The point is to see which kinds of bugs live in which kinds of wood and how often the exit there nest. They have been checking the wood every day since november and they bugs are STILL coming out. Another project requires that I go into the jungle looking for fern trees and various haracias, I dig them up and bring them back to camp with me. I then plant them on the camp and create an 'information page' about each plant. Another project includes photographing butterflies. Adriane has an abundance of dried butterflies, that need to be photographed and documented. I take the butterflies, put them in a bowl, and put the bowl in a bucket surrounded by water with a moth ball in it. I put a lid on the bucket and it basically creates a humid environment in which the butterflies can soften up and become flexible. Once they are soft, the tedious work begins of pinning the butterfly up to this foam plank. It's difficult because you can't touch the wings with your hands so you must use pins to open it up and position it in the proper way to dry. The other project is basically going into the jungle and documenting any animal activity I witness. The other day we set up cameras around the jungle and in a few days we will check the film and see what animals it caught on tape. I'm aware this is brief, I have been keeping a journal and you will eventually read the pages and pages I have talking about this entire experience. But I thought you might at least like to be assured that I am doing SOMETHING over here. : ) I hope everything is great with you dear Sonchia! See you in a month!

Hey Sonchia! So we talked to John and it looks like the best plan is for my Dad and I to fly out to Puerto Moldonado on Wednesday, stay there until Friday. Then, my Dad would see me off to the boat on Friday where I would continue up the river on the boat without him. Once we get to Puerto Moldanado we are going to try to coordinate with other students or mentors who are going to Laberinto (where the boat takes off) and see if we could take the taxi together, that way, my dad doesn't have to cut it so close for time (there is a flight out of Puerto Moldanado around 12:30). If we don't find another student or mentor, my dad will just take the taxi with me. That's what we've figured out so far!

Okay, well it sounds like my dad and I are going back to Lima tomorrow (Thursday morning) and may or may not meet up with the guy Kyle interned with. (?) If not, should we wait around in Lima a day or two? My dad does need to get back to work..soooo if something doesn´t come together-- does that mean I will be coming back? Don´t worry too much (although I´m stressing a bit myself) I will be fine no matter what I have to do. I´ll just have to take the let down, that´s all. Thanks for everything you are trying to do back there!

P.S- what happens if we don´t find an alternative? : ( I´m pretty bummed... would I come back to the states or what?

Yeah Peru has been awesome so far. At least I have had some great experiences already. I got to the village however and was pretty surprised at how Hara Krishna (sp?) it is. The village is basically a temple. I´m not gonna lie- the first word that came to mind was "cult". Everyone is really mellow and talks really soft. I´m not really sure what to do... I mean I could give it a try but I don´t want to somehow get brainwashed or something. I don´t really know if I should stay or go... what do you think?
