After a crazy weekend around the 4th of July, this week just continued to be hectic due to my parents arriving on Wednesday, and my birthday on Thursday.
Monday, another tour was set up for the interns, this time of the National Gallery of Art. As I was possibly going to intern at this museum originally, I found the experience very interesting just by viewing the differences in the museums. SAAM focuses on American Art solely, whereas the National Gallery has collections from all over the world. The Library there alone, which is where we had our tour, is 7 stories, technically 14 by the layout, with big lofty ceilings and the bottom floor dedicated to research workspace. It is ENORMOUS. And we weren't even in the main building, we were in one of the wings. Working there would probably have been amazing, but at the same time completely overwhelming.
Back in the office, I worked solely with Christine, who is the head of the Research and Scholars department (forgot to mention that). Judith was out for the majority of the week due to getting sick over the weekend. Christine and I worked on the Taos school artists, which is too technical to explain, so it might need its own blog.
On Thursday, my parents, aunts, and various friends stole me out of work and we went shopping in Georgetown for my birthday. Later we went to the restaurant Oya, to have a sushi dinner. Incidently, my aunt Julie picked the restaurant right across the street from my work office, literally straight out the door of the Victor Building, without even knowing. The food was delicious, and my birthday was really fun.
Over the weekend, the entire crew went down to Annapolis. It was kind of an extension of my birthday celebrations, and we went to this fabulous Maryland crab restaurant, and later we went boating in the Chesapeake bay. It was a nice little escape from the city life.
