Pinhead Institute 2008 Interns

Week 5 here in Woods Whole went as quickly as the rest of them and progress is starting to be made with the sediment samples. On Friday I finished running the samples through the solvent extractor, quite a chore with over 120 samples extracted. Next we start the chomatography where we will seperate the different organics to make for easier identification. This is a slow process as each column takes at least a few hours. This is a big step towards analyzing the data which should be much more interesting.

I went to Martha's Vineyard yesterday and was extremely underwhelmed, it was merely another island with lots of tourist shops. I did spend some time reading on the beach which was nice though. Overall, although there was some pretty scenery, Martha's Vineyard was rather unexciting.

I am going to my bosses house today for a BBQ with all the people from my lab, which should be fun, I work with a lot of great people who are always a blast to hang out with. Overall things are going quite well here and I am amazed at how fast the time is going by, but I am looking forward to getting home.

Dear Ian,
We really enjoyed reading all about your exciting summer. Memere is so proud of you. She said that it sounds like you are fulfilling your father's dream of long ago when he wanted to be an oceanographer. She said that it's wonderful that you are getting an opportunity to see the other side of our country. Keep up the good work.

Hi Ian!
I am so impressed! By your postings what you are experiencing must be amazing! I really enjoy reading about it. It's almost like being there! What a once in a lifetime experience. But you worked hard to get there and you deserve it. I look forward to reading your next posting.

Greetings Ian,
Each week has such an array of events! It is a pleasure to read about each one, and to see how the project is progressing. Sad to hear Martha's Vineyard has turned into tourist land: I have such a sense of its remoteness and beauty. Not anymore, eh? Maybe some of the more isolated areas are better. Ask around if Nantucket is worth seeing: it sounds so incredible.
Well, hope this week is full of...hard work, Interesting Ideas, and beautiful women.
Love you!
Mom

I don't know where it is in relation to Martha's Vineyard, but your Revolutonary ancestors settled originally in New Vineyard from England. In 1700 or thereabouts.
Good work on your assignments, you must feel very gratified! Marnie
