A streak of fear and excitement screamed down my spinal cord as I stepped off the plane and into the heat of the Costa Rican air. I arrived late last night on account of horrible weather in Houston. It was relieving to finally put a face with Andres’ voice. Luckily, a friend that I made on the flight helped me through immigration, baggage claim, and customs. The Costa Rican air filled my lungs and almost drowned me with its humidity. After turning the corner to get out of the airport I was startled by the eager greeting of the taxi drivers. Then I made my way across the street to finally meet Andres. After about a 45 minute drive we finally made it to my hotel, Aranjuez. The next morning Andres picked me up and we picked up his fiancée Cinthia and headed towards the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. We couldn’t pick up the research permits for Corcavado until the next day. When I asked Andres where we were going he explained to me that there was a place that has lots of hummingbird feeders and that we were going to have lunch and watch the hummingbirds. I had my first taste of a homemade empanada, it was so delicious that all of us had another one. On the way back down, we stopped at a fruit stand, which is basically where you pull off the road and they throw fruit through your window, and we had fresh strawberries for dessert. The strawberries were one of the best things I had ever tasted. Andres took me back to my hotel and there I took a nap and waited for dinner. Andres asked me where I would like to eat dinner, I said I didn’t know, so he took me out for pizza. We spent two hours for dinner and to get to know each other a little better. I went back to my hotel and felt a little more at home and had a good nights rest.
