Pinhead Institute 2008 Interns

Week 1,2, and 3

My time at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas has been unforgettable. When I first arrived at Ft. Worth I was busy from the start. I am staying with a very kind lady by the name of Roz Rosenthal. She kindly allowed me to stay with her last year as well for the time that I was in Texas. She shares many interests with me in music. We have gone to many concerts including Olga Kern, a very famous pianist, and the annual Concert in the Gardens. BRIT has offered much work to me that has kept me busy. There has never yet been a time that I have been doing nothing with BRIT. I have been assigned to various tasks including, moving boxes of specimens to the tops of shelves, writing a book review, writing a magazine article for Iridos (click here to view "Is there a Cure"), and my main task, creating a historical documentary on BRIT. I have learned much while being on this internship and I really feel that I will benefit from this in the future. The

Colleges near Ft. Worth have also struck my interest. I plan to major in Computer Science and possibly in film after that. I feel that If I have a computer science background, getting a job, or getting in to school for film will be very simple. Texas A & M, located in Arlington, TX, is a great university for Computer Science and with my connections here if Ft. Worth to A & M, I think that I will have a great advantage.

Week 4

It is the final week here. I can not believe that my internship is almost over already. This past week was very successful for me. Monday morning started off with me getting up at 6:30 and meeting with Dr. Tony Burgess about the green roof for the new BRIT building which will be built in three years. I was interviewing Dr. Burgess on film. I could not believe how smart Dr. Burgess was. I asked him only three questions and got a thirty minute interview with him. He was great for the documentary! Dr. Burgess then took me to the barons which are ultra-shallow soils. The soils are only 3-6 inches deep and then there is bed rock. Dr. Burgess is using these barons as a prototype for their green roof.

I also interviewed several people from BRIT including Keri McNew, Tiana Franklin, Amanda Niell about the Andes to Amazon Biodiversity Project which I participated in last year. I also interviewed Jason Best, the IT manager of BRIT. These interviews taught me alot about BRIT that I never knew and it was very good experience for me.

Aside from work at BRIT I have also been very entertained at Roz's house. She has been taking me to countless concerts. She has also allowed me to take myself to the Botanical Gardens and the Ft. Worth Zoo.

The documentary has been going very successful and I feel that it will really turn out great.
