I BROKE MY ARM! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT! IT HURT! haha just kidding it TIS April Fools day you know...my favorite holiday! ANYways...This seems as good a time as any to talk about my living situation. It’s perfect; Marcos totally hooked me up with the sickest spot available. It’s just far enough away from everyone that I can have space, peace, and quiet (not that that’s very hard to come by around here). Just far enough that I can belt out songs in the shower and play music without feeling bad. But just close enough that it’s not a drag to go back and forth from the central area etc. I have a whole Cabana to myself—which is rare. Volunteers and students normally stay in ‘dormitorios’ in one building together—but since I’m pretty much the only volunteer—I get my own cabana. I just have to move if a lot of visitors come. It’s about 20’ X 20’ if that. I’ve got light and water. The thing I dig about this room is its practical simplicity. I have one chair in this room, and it is exactly that; a chair! It’s wooden, has four legs, a seat and a back. I use it to sit on! I sleep in a single bed—once again, wooden, four legs, and a mattress. I have a lovely mosquito net that protects me every night so I can rest my head without worries. Mosquito netting is the greatest! I crawl into my little bed, knowing that the three-inch long spider residing in my bathroom will not munch on me during the night. I’m not kidding! There is a huge black furry spider that resides in my bathroom and I am planning to let it live there for the entire duration of my stay. I’ve named it Betty. (However, I am not sure of “it” is a he or a she!) At first, I must admit, that I was terrified of Betty. But after much reflection, I realized that it was best to let the little critter stay and eat the mosquitoes, flies and cucarachas! Better to have a predator around than be the prey of these plentiful insects. I also decided to embrace this as an opportunity to abolish my deep and abiding fear of spiders. So, each night I edge a littler closer. It has finally reached the point that Betty can be inches from my nose- and I don’t even flinch! I can look Betty in the EYE now! —In fact, now, she seems more afraid of me than I am of her. With good reason I suppose. I mean…just look at me! Every day is a bad hair day in the Amazon! I also have a frog living in my room. I tried to catch it several times but it was too slippery and quick for clumsy Emma G. So, eventually I decided that it too, could stay. Why not have two predators around!?! Its name was “Frog”.
In my room there is also a twin sized bed—which I have turned into a couch-like comfort zone. I chill there when I’m tired and just want to nap, read or play guitar. My shower is a shower. It’s got a faucet with one nozzle for cold water. I actually do miss my nice warm showers. That is gonna’ be excellent when I get home. I wash all of my clothes by hand, and only wash a few items a day so that way I’ll always have something to wear while something else is drying. Washing machines are a nice luxury too.
-OOOoooh I also want to talk about this righteous rainstorm that’s going down right now. We were playing our afternoon volleyball game as usual—which normally lasts until dinner (around six) when the clouds started to roll in, really dark and fast. Oscuridad; it was as if night had instantly swallowed up the day. I was enthralled; I could have stayed out there for hours watching the clouds dance in and around each other—the wind violently shaking the trees. It was so dark that we had to turn on the generator early for light. Then it started to rain and lighting. A few of us sat on the porch –enthralled- just enjoying the scene. It was terrific.
